Hi, I’m interested in making my small backyard into a a garden like Teresa Loe’s.
Just saw it on the show today, great idea….of particular interest; the chickens, how did you get them to lay eggs with a rooster?, and is the laying area need to be away from the coop?

Thanks,

Tony
Charlotte, NC

Hi Tony-
I’m glad you enjoyed the episode of my backyard homestead (Episode #115). We get that question about roosters a lot. Surprisingly, you do not need a rooster to get eggs. The chickens will lay eggs everyday without a rooster (they are just unfertilized). If you want baby chicks…THEN you need a rooster.

The nesting boxes for laying eggs is inside that small coop. They like to be inside the coop so that they feel safe.

We are about to film another episode on “backyard chicken keeping” for season two. Stay tuned for that one. It will cover everything you need to know to have chickens of your own!

Hi Tony,

Live in Charlotte as well. You don’t need a rooster to lay eggs, all hens lay eggs if right age. 6 months to two years. Rooster needed if you wish to have hatching eggs, meaning you want to raise chicks. Otherwise they are eggs for you to eat (3-5 a week per hen). They lay their eggs in a nest which is in the coop. Usually 2-3 hens per nest. Go to http://www.thegardencoops.com to see some easy and inexpense plans.

Good luck,
Carolyn

Patricia,
Where in Florida are you located? Let us know if we can help put you in touch with your local station, or use the Station Finder above to see if anything pops up.

We actually have no say in what stations choose to pick us up, but the good news is YOU DO! Since public television is viewer-supported, they look to you to tell them what you’d like to see – and it works, they really do listen! Thanks to viewer calls and emails we are picked up in new markets regularly.

Many stations are still re-running Season One episodes, and we’ve just begun airing Season Two. If all else fails, you can always come back here and watch full episodes of Growing a Greener World online. http://www.growingagreenerworld.com/category/episodes/season-two/

Thank you so much for your comment, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you get the message to your station!

Cheers,
Tink

How do we get this show in Seattle? Of all places, we like green here and to not have this show is such a shame. Do I need to write to our cable providers?
