Hancock County was the most populous county in Georgia in 1800, and cotton was its thriving industry. A century later, the boll weevil decimated that industry.
The small town of Sparta, Georgia was one of many that never quite fully recovered. But the future is looking brighter after one couple provided an unlikely spark and accidentally started an urban farming revolution right in the middle of downtown – from front yard gardens to a mushroom-growing warehouse.

Elm Street Gardens currently makes up ten acres of farmland, starting in the Currey’s backyard, and is an example of how urban farming can transform a community.
